After applying Exchange Security Updates (July 13, 2021), the Recent Activity page is not accessible in OWA

SUMMARY

List of Exchange Security Updates released on July 13, 2021

  • Security update for Exchange Server 2019 CU9 (KB5004780)
  • Security update for Exchange Server 2019 CU10 (KB5004780)
  • Security update for Exchange Server 2016 CU20 (KB5004779)
  • Security update for Exchange Server 2016 CU21 (KB5004779)
  • Security update for Exchange Server 2013 CU23 (KB5004778)

 

After applying an Exchange Server July 2021 Security update, when users try to logon to OWA, the process does not reach the Recent Activity page and will eventually time out just to be redirected back to the OWA logon page.

To restore service, please refer to the Solution which best applies to you below.

SOLUTION FOR EPG

To apply the patch updates for EPG, please follow the steps below.

  1. Download the Zip folder containing the patch files from the link above, unzip and save them 
  2. Navigate to the EPG folder
    • Program Files > Messageware > EPG
  3. Make a backup of the EPG Bin folder from:
    • C:\Program Files\Messageware\EPG\vDir\bin
  4. You can stop one of the following:
    • MSExchangeOWAAppPool - See Step 5
    • World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC) - See Step 6
  5. For the MSExchangeOWAAppPool 
    • Open IIS Manager and navigate to Application protocols and stop the MSExchangeOWAAppPoolGraphical user interface, application

  6. For the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC)
    • Open Services and navigate to World Wide Web Publishing Service 
    • Note: There will be disruptions when W3SVC is stoppedGraphical user interface, text, application

    • Right click on the service and select stop                                                             
  7. Copy the downloaded patch files and paste it in the EPG Bin Folder                           Graphical user interface

  8. Click Replace the file in the following destination for the following prompt (do this for all the files)                               Graphical user interface, text, application, email

  • Restart the MSExchangeOWAAppPool or the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC), from step 4

 

 


SOLUTION FOR OWA GUARD

To apply the patch updates for OWA Guard, please follow the steps below.

  1. Download the Zip folder containing the patch files from the link above, unzip and save them 
  2. Navigate to the OWA Guard folder
    • Program Files > Messageware > OWAGuard
  3. Make a backup of the OWA Guard Bin folder from:
    • C:\Program Files\Messageware\OWAGuard\vDir\bin
  4. You can start and stop one of the following:
    • MSExchangeOWAAppPool - See Step 5
    • World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC) - See Step 6
  5. For the MSExchangeOWAAppPool 
    • Open IIS Manager and navigate to Application protocols and stop the MSExchangeOWAAppPool
  6. For the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC)
    • Open Services and navigate to World Wide Web Publishing Service
    • Note: There will be disruptions when W3SVC is stopped            
    • Right click on the service and select stop                                                                         
  7. Copy the downloaded patch files and paste it in the OWA Guard Bin Folder                                               
  8. Click Copy and Replace for the following prompt (do this for all the files)

  •  Restart the MSExchangeOWAAppPool or the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC), from step 4
