How to improve OWA Desktop performance and notifications

SUMMARY

 

This article outlines how to implement fast streaming notifications for New Mail and Pre-load Compose window for faster performance in OWA Desktop.

 

GUIDANCE

 

To enable or disable this feature you will need to make changes to the either the user.config file in a singular installation or to the owaDesktopDeployment.xml file in a deployment scenario.

 

Modify the owaDesktopDeployment.xml for deployment scenarios:

1.     Open the owaDesktopDeployment.xml file in an html editor such as Notepad++

2.     Navigate to the performance section under Mailbox Settings

3.     Streaming notifications are enabled by default unless OWA Desktop is running in kiosk mode. To enable legacy polling notifications set the notificationMethod to Pull

4.     To preload the Compose Window for faster OWA Desktop performance set this element to true

a.     other options are to preload AllWindows or OneWindow

1.     Close any open instance of OWA Desktop.

2.     Ensure you can view hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer

3.     Navigate to %APPDATA%\Messageware\OWADesktop  (for example: C:\Users\<username> \AppData\Roaming\Messageware\OWADesktop)

4.     Open the User.config file with an HTML editor such as Notepad++

5.     Navigate to the Mailboxes section

6.     To enable streaming notifications for faster performance, set the NotificationMethod to "Stream"

7.     To preload the Compose Window for faster performance, set the preloadComposeMail to "true"

8.     Save any changes.

9.     Launch OWA Desktop through All Programs.
