Users receiving "File retrieval error. (31 - 0x2ee7)" when viewing attachments and an archiving solution is in the environment

This article applies to the following products:
     Messageware AttachView 2003

When attempting to view an attachment using AttachView in Outlook Web Access, the following error message appears: “File retrieval error. (31- 0x2ee7)"

This issue typically occurs when AttachView is installed on a front-end server where an archiving solution such as Symantec Enterprise Vault is installed. Some archiving solutions enable the WinHTTP proxy. By default, the front-end server is not included in the WinHTTP bypass list.

To correct this issue add the front-end server where Messageware is installed, to the WinHTTP bypass list using the proxycfg command.

Before running this command make a backup of the registry key where this information is kept by exporting this key to a REG file. You can always double click on the REG file to add the information back to the registry.

The steps outlined below indicate how to export the registry key, and how to add the front-end server to the Bypass List.

1.     Exporting the registry information

a)     Open the registry editor and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\

b)    Click on the File\Export (Windows 2003) or click on Registry\Export Registry File (Windows 2000)

c)     Enter a file name and take the default (*.reg) as file type

d)    Click on the Save button

2.     Add the server to the WinHTTP bypass list

a)     From the command line enter the following command and press enter
proxycfg -p <ServerName> "IPAddress"
(Where <ServerName> is the server you are adding to the bypass list and IpAddress is the IP address of the server you’re adding to the Bypass List)

b)    Clear the local browser cache (Tools\Internet Options\Delete Files) and refresh the page

3.     Verify that users are able to view attachments in OWA

A different parameter may be needed to configure the Bypass List, or maybe to configure direct access to the WinHTTP proxy. Refer to the parameter list detailed in the Microsoft documentation Proxy Configuration Tool for more information. You can refer to the link below for more information:

ProxyCfg.exe, a Proxy Configuration Tool

According to Microsoft, after using the proxy configuration tool, the original proxy settings cannot be restored; this is why we recommend making a backup of this registry entry. You can refer to the link below for more information:
