Receiving a 500 Internal Server Error when using localhost to access OWA on the Exchange server

This article applies to the following products:
     Microsoft Exchange Server 2007

SYMPTOM

When trying to access OWA using localhost on the Exchange Server, the Administrator receives the following error message:

HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error

Calling LoadLibraryEx on ISAPI filter "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\owa\auth\owaauth.dll" failed

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because by default 32-bit components are enabled on the Exchange Server.  The 32-bit components need to be disabled on the CAS.

RESOLUTION

To correct this behavior follow the steps below.

  1. On the CAS, open up the command prompt (Start\Run\cmd)
  2. Navigate to \inetpub\AdminScripts
  3. Type in the following command: cscript.exe adsutil.vbs set W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32BitAppOnWin64 false
  4. Hit enter after typing in the above line
  5. Now the Messaging Administrator can access localhost on the Server
