Error "Unauthorized to view this file" occurs when accessing Freedocs in the public folder through OWA

SYMPTOM

 

Users receives the following error “Unauthorized to view this file” when viewing published documents under the public folder.

 

CAUSE

 

By default, Exchange 2003 does not permit to use OWA to directly access freedocs that are stored in public folder.

 

RESOLUTION    

To correct this behavior, configure Client Access settings using the AttachView Management Console to permit access to all file and attachments that are made through AttachView, third party software, or any manually entered URL.  

1.     On the server, launch Messageware AttachView Console (All Programs\Messageware Incorporated\AttachView for Outlook Web Access\AttachView Administrative Console)

2.     Click on Default Settings

3.     Select Client Access tab

4.     Ensure the first option is selected "Permit access to all file and attachment requests that are made through AttachView, third party software, or any manually entered URL.

5.     Click OK and Restart World Wide Web Publishing server to take effect immediately

 

In addition, AttachView binocular icon does not appear as this function is only used for converting attachments which does not apply on freedocs. Below are the steps on how to correctly publish documents in the Public folder instead of using dragged and dropped method

 

1.     Login to OWA and access the Public Folder

2.     Click New to publish a document

3.     Attach a test file and Click Post

4.     Click on the test file under the Public Folder

5.     Confirm the binocular appears next to the filename

6.     Convert test file to confirm if any issue or error occurs
