Users receive a "File retrieval error" message when viewing attachments

SYMPTOM

 

Users may receive one of the following errors when viewing attachments:

      File retrieval error. (31 - 0x3e5)

File retrieval error. (1064 - 0x80070003)

File retrieval error. (31 - 0xb7)

 

 

CAUSE

 

When AttachView is first installed on an Exchange server, the default path for the temporary files and the converted files is configured to \Program Files\Messageware\AttachView\Temp

 

There are two possible causes for the above error messages.

 

Cause 1: If the above path is manually modified in the AttachView Administrative Console as opposed to using the Browse button (where the folder may not have been created by the administrator) the path may be pointing to a folder that does not exist

 

Cause 2: In environments where security groups may not be listed and/or the path may inherit certain permissions from the parent folder

 

 

RESOLUTION

 

To correct this issue apply the steps below.

 

Verify that the path for the temporary files and the converted files exists

1.      On the Exchange server, launch the AttachView Administrator Console

2.      Under Global Settings select the Paths tab

3.      Verify that the Path for the temporary files and the Path for converted files points to an existing folder. Should the folder not exist, proceed on creating it

4.      Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Services for changes to take effect

 

Verify the security permissions for the path for the temporary files and the converted files

1.      Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the Path for the temporary files

2.      Right-click the folder that the path points to, and select Properties

3.      Under the Security tab, verify if the Everyone group exists, and its Permissions are set to Full Control

4.      Repeat steps 1-3 for the Path for converted files

5.      Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Services for changes to take effect
