Users receive the following error when viewing attachments: "http error 500 internal server error"

SYMPTOM

 

Users receive the following error when viewing attachments using the binocular icon:

 

"http error 500 internal server error"

   

CAUSE

 

When AttachView is first installed on an Exchange server, the default path for the temporary files and the converted files is configured to \Program Files\Messageware\AttachView\Temp

 

There are two possible causes for the above error messages.

 

Cause 1: If the above path is manually modified in the AttachView Administrative Console as opposed to using the Browse button (where the folder may not have been created by the administrator) the path may be pointing to a folder that does not exist

 

Cause 2: In environments where security groups may not be listed and/or the path may inherit certain permissions from the parent folder

 

RESOLUTION

 

To resolve the http error 500 internal server error, follow the steps below:

 

1.        On the Exchange 2003 server, launch the AttachView Administrative Console

2.        Under Global Settings select the Paths tab

3.     For Path for Temporary Files and Path for Converted Files, click on Browse and change the path to \Program Files\Messageware Incorporated\AttachView for Outlook Web Access\Temp

4.        Click on Apply and Ok

5.        Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service for the changes to take effect
